Belt Promotions Head to Leadbetter Beach

Once a year, we take our belt promotions outside. This year, we're heading to Leadbetter Beach, and it's a potluck, so bring something to share.

It's one of our favorite days on the calendar. Here's what's planned for promotion day, plus a free self-defense class for women, open mat, summer camps and a request for your help with this year's Best Of nominations.

Celebrating rank outdoors

A belt promotion is a milestone, and we believe milestones should be shared. Most of the year, promotions happen inside the dojo. Once a year, we bring them to the beach so families, friends and classmates can celebrate together in the open air.

The day runs in order, from the youngest to the oldest. It starts with a special class for our Lil' Ninjas, then the Tigers' belt promotion, then the Dragons and finally the adult and youth promotion. Everyone gets to watch everyone else. Younger students see where their training can lead. Older students remember where they started. Parents get to see how far their kids have come.

And then we eat together. A potluck reminds us that the dojo isn't just a place to train. It's a community.

We also want students to see a new belt for what it is: a milestone, not a finish line. Celebrating in front of family and friends makes that milestone feel earned, and coming back to class the next week is what turns it into real growth.

Free women's self-defense

We're hosting a free women's self-defense class. You'll learn the basics of self-defense, and no experience is necessary. It's for women only, so the room is focused, supportive and comfortable for beginners.

We believe everyone deserves to feel safe and confident. A short class won't make anyone an expert, but learning a few basics in a supportive room can change how you carry yourself. Sign up at the front desk or contact us.

Good self-defense starts long before anything physical happens. It begins with noticing what's around you, setting clear boundaries and carrying yourself with confidence. A beginner class is a chance to practice those basics with other women, at your own pace, without pressure.

Open mat and summer at the dojo

Our monthly Friday open mat is free to all students. It's a relaxed time to practice, ask questions and train with people you don't always see in class.

For kids, summer camp runs for a day, a week or all summer long. Children make new friends, play indoor and outdoor sports, take part in educational activities, play in our dojo and go on weekly field trips. For young teen boys, we also offer a special week-long sleep-away camp that combines leadership education, physical training and the power of the great outdoors.

Parents' Night Out continues every month. You enjoy a night off while your kids are safe and having fun. It sells out every month, so plan ahead.

Summer is when many kids discover the dojo for the first time. Camp gives them a chance to try martial arts in a fun, relaxed setting, make friends and build confidence, all while parents know they're in good hands.

Thank you for nominating us

For more than a decade straight, the Santa Barbara Independent has named us Best Martial Arts Studio, and we'd love to keep the streak going. This year, the Independent changed how voting works. To be eligible for any title, a business first has to be nominated by many people.

We asked our families to nominate us for Best Martial Arts Studio, Best Kids' Summer Camp and Best Fitness Program, and we're grateful to everyone who took a couple of minutes to help. Recognition like this reflects the effort of our students, the care of our instructors and the support of families who tell their friends about us. We never take it for granted, and we work every year to keep earning it.

Whether it's a promotion on the sand, a self-defense class or a quiet Friday at open mat, every part of our calendar is built around the same idea: people grow faster when they grow together. We're proud to grow alongside you.
