Black Belt Power Authors Sign Books at Our Holiday Party
By Austin Curtis ·

"Be inspired to accomplish anything in your life." That's how we invited our dojo family to come watch our black belt test this fall. And it's a big part of why a book called Black Belt Power meant so much to us this year.
Here's the news about the book our community helped create, and how we wrapped up the year together.
Why a black belt test inspires everyone
A black belt test is open to the whole dojo for a reason. When you watch committed students push through a demanding test, something shifts. Younger students see what's possible. Parents see what their kids are working toward. Adults who have been training for years remember why they started.
We believe that kind of inspiration is contagious. We told our families that our committed students would blow them away. That's what a black belt test is for: everyone who watches goes home with a little more belief in what they can do.
Black Belt Power
This year saw the release of Black Belt Power, an international bestselling book of inspirational stories from black belts, including a few people our dojo family knows well. Master Mel is part of the project, and several of the book's contributing authors joined us at our holiday gathering to sign copies.
Stories matter. Every black belt has a story of setbacks, persistence and growth. When those stories are shared, they become a roadmap for the next student who wonders if they can make it, too.
That's something we see in our own dojo every day. A new white belt hears how a black belt struggled with the same technique, and suddenly the goal feels reachable.
Leadership at home and at school
Earlier in the season, we hosted a Veterans Day Camp for kids. It was a full day of games, fitness and character development, where campers learned what it means to be a leader at home and at school. No martial arts experience was needed. Leadership isn't something kids wait to learn until they earn a black belt. It starts with how they treat their families, their classmates and themselves, today.
We also introduced a martial arts app with instructional videos, so students can review their techniques at home between classes.
Celebrating together
To close the year, we invited all past and present students, parents, friends and family to an adult holiday gathering at Area 5.1 in the Funk Zone. It was a chance to dress up out of workout clothes and get to know the people you see in class every week.
That's the heart of it. Black belts inspire us, but it's our whole community that makes the journey possible.
