February Brings Weapons Seminars and Belt Promotions

By Austin Curtis ·

Although martial arts is an individual sport, there are times when every one of us has to work as a team, on the mat and in life. That's why our focus for February is teamwork.

Here's how teamwork shows up in a martial arts class and what's on the calendar this month.

Why teamwork belongs in an individual art

When you test for a belt, you test on your own. Nobody else can perform your techniques for you. But nobody gets to that test alone, either. Every student learns with a partner, holds pads for someone else, and depends on classmates to practice with care and control.

That's the balance we want kids to understand. Personal responsibility and teamwork aren't opposites. The best martial artists take ownership of their own progress and help the people around them improve, too.

Talking about teamwork at home

We ask parents to read the newsletter with their kids and talk about the places teamwork shows up in their lives: a group project at school, chores at home, a sports team or even getting along with a brother or sister. Then pick a common goal together, something that helps your child work well with their peers and their family.

That conversation is small, but it matters. When a child hears the same message at the dojo and at home, the lesson sticks.

Getting ready for promotions

Skill bar testing is underway, and promotion week is coming up for our Youth, Tigers and Adult students. Students, please make sure all your patches are on your uniform and bring your binders to every class. We encourage everyone to plan ahead and have their promotion paperwork filled out early, so test week is about your techniques, not last-minute forms.

Promotions are also a great example of teamwork. Each student earns their own belt, but the whole class cheers, supports and celebrates together.

Weapons seminars and fun nights

This month brings a run of special training:

  • A knife and gun defense seminar for our black belts
  • A short stick seminar for kids
  • An adult seminar covering escrima sticks, cane and empty hand techniques

Weapons training sharpens timing, distance and awareness, and it gives students a fresh way to look at the techniques they already know.

There's also plenty of fun on the calendar, including a Valentine's buddy event for our younger students and a Teen Fun Friday Movie Night, where teens get to vote on the movie.

Work as a team, prepare for your promotion and we'll see you on the mat!
