Our Goleta Dojo Opens
By Austin Curtis ·
We're so excited to welcome you, Goleta! The newest location of Santa Barbara Dojo is open, and it's been a long time coming.
Here's how we're opening our doors, the self-defense seminar that kicked things off and what's ahead as our family of schools grows.
From plans to a dojo
Last year, we shared the story behind the Goleta dojo: signing the lease, getting the keys and working through plans and permits. Now the doors are open. Santa Barbara Dojo Goleta is enrolling students, and classes have begun. You'll find us on South Turnpike Road, between CVS and Vons.
Opening with Ho Shin Sul
To open the new space, we hosted a beginner-friendly self-defense seminar on Ho Shin Sul, led by Master Austin. Ho Shin Sul means self-defense techniques against grabs, and it's what Hapkido is famous for.
Grab defense is one of the most practical skills a person can learn. Many real-world situations start with someone grabbing a wrist, a sleeve or a shoulder. Learning how to respond calmly and effectively builds confidence for students of every age.
We changed the seminar to a free event so everyone could come check out the new space. It felt right. The best way to introduce a new dojo is to get people on the mat, learning something practical they can use for the rest of their lives.
How we're welcoming new students
For now, we're taking the time to orient new Goleta students properly. Current students at our downtown location are asked to keep training there while we welcome new families in Goleta, and we'll share a plan soon for anyone who wants to train at the new location.
We believe that's how a new school should start: patiently, with care for every student who walks in. A strong foundation matters more than a fast start.
That's true for students, and it's true for schools. The first months of a new dojo set the culture for years to come, and we want Goleta's culture to feel like home from day one.
What's next
The new year is full of momentum. We're launching a demo team for black belts, working on forms and choreographed demonstrations to showcase at future events. We're also holding a meeting for all black belts to go over expectations, rank requirements and the path through each Dan.
And we'll be hosting a grand opening for the Goleta location in the future, so stay tuned.
To every family joining us in Goleta: welcome. We can't wait to see you on the mat.
