New Black Belts Promoted as No Junk June Begins
By Austin Curtis ·
Congratulations, black belts! We had a wonderful test this past Saturday, and we want to give a special shout-out to our newest black belts: Sensei Christian, Teryn, Noa, Dorene, Shane and Sadie. You made us proud.
A black belt test is a finish line, but it's also a starting point. This month we're talking about what comes after the belt, a simple challenge to help everyone renew their commitment to health and some new ways to train together as summer heats up.
Black belts give back
Remember when you were a candidate and you came to those things called "mentor sessions"? Higher degree black belts generously volunteered their time to help you along your journey. Now it's your turn.
We have spots open over the summer for black belts to lead mentor sessions for current candidates. Mentoring is also a requirement for advancement, and for a good reason. We believe a black belt is a responsibility, not a trophy. Teaching someone else what you've learned deepens your own understanding, and it keeps alive the chain of help that got you here.
In a good dojo, the highest-ranking students are the most servant-minded. They're quick to welcome a newcomer, hold a pad or stay after class to help someone who's struggling. A belt isn't a license to boss anyone around. It's a responsibility to lead with respect, and candidates learn that best by watching black belts live it.
If you think you aren't ready to mentor, that's exactly the feeling your candidate has about their test. Show up anyway. Your experience is more valuable than you know. To sign up, see the front desk.
No Junk June: consistency over perfection
We're almost halfway through the year, and we want to support you in your health goals with a fresh commitment: No Junk June. It's your opportunity to let go of junk food or fast food for the month and replace it with something nutritious.
Next time you're in the dojo, pick up a pledge form and add it to the Winner's Wall. This isn't about being perfect or "all or nothing." Simply choose what you're willing to commit to, big or small. It's consistency that's key.
To help you succeed, clear the junk out of your house and office. Bring it to the dojo, and we'll be happy to get rid of it for you. You deserve to be happy and healthy, and it's easier when we do it together.
We've found that boring is best when it comes to habits. Brushing your teeth doesn't feel exciting, but you do it every day, and it works. Healthy eating can be the same: small, repeatable choices that add up. And if you have kids at home, they're watching. Children copy what they see, so the commitment you make for yourself quietly becomes a lesson for them, too.
Train with Grandmaster, and with each other
This rotation, Grandmaster Wheaton is teaching an adult martial arts class at midday on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's a chance to train with him in an intimate class setting, and all ranks are welcome.
Our monthly Friday open mat is now open to all students. Open mat is a relaxed time to practice what you're working on, ask questions and train with classmates you don't usually see. Reserve your spot at the front desk.
We're also looking forward to a kickboxing seminar with Grandmaster Randy Reid at the start of the summer.
Staying cool on the mat
It's summertime, and you may have noticed that it's heating up a little in the dojo. Martial artists now have the option of wearing a sleeveless gi top in class. It's a white, medium-weight top that only needs a Hapkido International patch. It isn't the right uniform for tests, but it may be a welcome change on hot afternoons and evenings. Ask the front desk to order one.
For kids, our summer camp is almost full, and we're proud it was voted a "Best of" finalist last year. Parents' Night Out continues, too, with pizza, friends, games, a movie and more while you enjoy a night off.
Whether you're a new black belt, a candidate or a beginner, the path is the same: keep showing up, help the people around you and choose consistency over perfection.
