Santa Barbara Dojo Celebrates Twenty Years

It's our anniversary, and what a milestone it is: twenty years of family martial arts in Santa Barbara. We couldn't wait to celebrate with all of you.

An anniversary like this is a chance to look back with gratitude and look ahead with purpose. So many families have trained with us over the years, and each of them is part of why we're still here.

Here's what has stayed the same over all these years, what our name means and how we marked the occasion together.

Where it started

Our dojo began as a family business. Master Mel and Grandmaster Dave moved our family to Santa Barbara to start a full-time dojo, and they risked everything and worked tirelessly to make it a success. For years we were known as Martial Arts Family Fitness. Many of you first walked through our doors under that name.

From the start, the idea was simple: a dojo where the whole family could train, grow and belong. Kids and parents on the same mat. That idea hasn't changed.

Same family, new name

Today we're Santa Barbara Dojo. The name is new, but the family is the same. We still teach on the same principles: respect, consistency, service and a belief that martial arts is for every member of the family. The name simply says what we've always been, a dojo that belongs to this town.

A name change can feel like a big deal. But for us, it was a way to honor where we've always been. Santa Barbara welcomed our family years ago, and we're proud to carry its name.

Celebrating together

To mark the anniversary, we invited our whole dojo family to a celebration at El Paseo Restaurant downtown, with appetizers, dinner and dancing. It was kid-friendly, because a family dojo celebration should include the whole family.

We believe milestones are meant to be shared. This one belongs to every student who has tied on a white belt, every parent who has cheered at a promotion and every volunteer who has helped with a Basket Brigade.

It also belongs to our instructors, who help lead the next generation. That's the legacy we care about most: people who grow here, and then help others grow, too.

Thank you

Thank you for being part of our story. Here's to the next chapter.

We'll keep teaching, keep serving and keep welcoming new families onto the mat, just as we have from the very beginning.
