Why We Teach Families on the Same Mat
By Austin Curtis ·

During Covid, families first trained together at home on Zoom. Then they trained together in small pods at the dojo. When we came out of Covid, we made a Family class. In our family classes, parents, kids, teens, and grandparents train together. You bow in together, practice together, and walk out together.
Time together
A week can pull a family in every direction. Family class is time that belongs to all of you. Phones stay off the mat. You get to see each other try something new, laugh when a kick wobbles, and cheer when it lands. Plenty of families tell us the ride home is the part they look forward to most.
Learning side by side
Everyone in the room is a student. A parent learns a stance next to their child. A grandparent practices the same block. You learn the same art, right beside the people you came with, each of you moving at a pace that fits.
Encouraging each other
It's easier to keep going when someone you love is on the mat with you. Kids see a parent try, miss, and try again. Parents see their kids stand a little taller. Encouragement like that is hard to offer from a chair. It happens on its own when you're training together.
Shared goals
A family can share a goal the way a class does. You're working on the same skills and building the same habit, and you show up for the same reason. When someone has a hard day, the rest of the family is already there. You're in it together, and that makes the hard parts lighter.
A healthy habit for the whole family
Training is good for the body and good for the mind, and it sticks when the whole family shares it. You leave a little stronger and a little more focused, with something real to talk about at dinner. Effort, patience, and getting back up follow you home.
That's why we teach families on the same mat. It's time together, learning side by side, and a healthy habit the whole family can keep.
