How do I get my Kids into doing Karate?
If you’re like me, you’ll do anything to get your kids into Martial Arts because you know how valuable it is for them. You may want more discipline, fitness, confidence, or self defense skills for your child, and there is nothing better than Martial Arts training for them.
The question that I’m always asking myself is: “How can I inspire my kids to participate in Martial Arts?” This is not only because I teach kids, but also because I have 3 young daughters and I want them to be able to protect themselves when they grow up. Perhaps you want the same for your kids? If so, this short article may be helpful for you.
Read this article if you’ve had any of the following problems or worries:
Your child is scared to try a class or had a bad experience at a Karate studio
Your child isn’t too excited about Martial Arts
Your child isn’t easily motivated
You want to “nail it” on the first try when introducing your child to Karate
5 Ways to Ensure Your Kids do Karate
#1) Martial Art Movies
If you really want to get your kids into some sort of martial art, it’s time to start curating a kid-friendly martial art movie marathon! Nothing gets kids more amped! Here’s the list of a few of my favorites:
Kung Fu Panda (all of them!)
Karate Kid (2010)
3 Ninjas (all 3 of them!)
Teen Age Mutant Ninja Turtles II (1991)
Sidekicks (1992)
The Spy Next Door (2010)
#2) Read Parent Testimonials
Lots of kids love Martial Arts! Reading the online reviews from parents will encourage you and give you even more passion about the benefits of karate for your child. When you are convinced of how awesome this program will be, your energy will be contagious.
#3) Bring Your Child to a Class
This might be the most obvious way to get your son or daughter involved with Martial Arts! Sign him or her up for a trial class and let the magic happen! A good instructor will know exactly how to get your child motivated once they are on the floor. If getting on the training floor is the hardest part, offer them a reward for being brave and trying something new.
#4) Address your Child’s Fears
Martial Arts is the answer to bullies, bad guys, and yes - the boogie man. Is your kid scared of something? Let them know how much safer and stronger they will be after they’ve learned a few moves. A shark? No worries, just karate chop it! Side note: If your child is scared of training Karate, you have an opportunity to teach them how to conquer their fears. A good instructor will help make this a huge win.
#5) Try a Class For Yourself
We are superheroes in the eyes of our children! When we are on the floor training, they are more likely going to try it too! You can try a class with them or separately - as long as they can see that you do it too. Even if you have an old picture of yourself doing Kung Fu or dressed up as a ninja - be the example and encourage your child to walk in your foot steps.
I hope that gives you a few ideas if you are stuck with this problem!
